Where Does Michigan Divorce Rate Rank As Ex-Spouse Day Approaches?

Fact Checked by Peter Mooney

April 14 is National Ex-Spouse Day. We will try not to think too hard about the fact that this day falls exactly two months after Valentine’s Day.

While it’s not likely that people are buying flowers for their former flame, one must wonder just how many others out there are feeling the burn.

So we took a break from reviewing Michigan online casino sites to take a look at this … let’s call it a less than sentimental day.

Michigan Rate Fairly Low And Dropping

BetMichigan.com, your source for Michigan sports betting, used data from the National Center for Health Statistics to determine the states with the highest and lowest divorce rates.

The good news for Michigan is that the state’s rate is relatively low. Among the 46 states reporting for this research, Michigan is 34th with a rate of 2.3 divorces per 1,000 population.

The figures for the divorce rate are per 1,000 population in 2021, as reported by the National Vital Statistics System at the National Center for Health Statistics.

One of the interesting things revealed in the NVSS research is that the divorce rate has been dropping steadily in most states since 1990. Michigan has followed this pattern.

The report includes the data from the years 1990 and 1995, then annually from 1999 until 2021. In that time, the highest reported divorce rate in Michigan was 4.3 per 1,000 in 1990. The rate hovered between 3.0 and 3.9 from 1999 to 2015, then began dipping below 3.0 in 2016 for the Great Lakes State.

National Highs, Lows in Divorce Rates

The Vegas wedding (often a quick and arguably tacky occasion) has become a cliche. What’s reality is that Nevada also leads the nation in divorce rate and has done so for many years. In 2021, Nevada’s rate was 4.3.

Also ranking high on the list are Oklahoma (3.8 divorce rate) and Wyoming (3.7), with Alabama and Arkansas (3.6 each) rounding out the top five.

At the bottom of the scale, Massachusetts had the lowest rate for 2021 at just 1.0, with Illinois (1.3), Texas (1.4), Maryland (1.6) and Kansas (1.9) also reporting a high percentage of enduring marriages.

Methodology: These statistics were reported at the National Vital Statistics System portion of the National Center for Health Statistics website. The NCHS site, in turn, falls under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The rates were determined by 1,000 total population residing in a state. The data was reported each year from 1999 to 2021. Before that, statistics are given for the individual years of 1995 and 1990.
